Beer garden on theViktualienmarkt.

The beer garden on the Viktualienmarkt is the most central beer garden in the state capital and you can relax under the shady chestnut trees after a strenuous shopping spree through the city centre.

On the 1100 seats you can relax on the classic beer benches and follow the hustle and bustle on the Viktualienmarkt. You can fortify yourself with a snack and a freshly tapped beer. The beer garden is a speciality, as it is not one brewery that fills the beer mugs with its beer, but the major Munich breweries alternate every 6 weeks:

  • Hofbräu
  • Spaten Bräu
  • Augustiner Bräu
  • Hacker Pschorr
  • Paulaner
  • Löwenbräu

The beer garden has a colourful mix of visitors: office workers, tourists and even Munich residents in traditional costume enjoy the central beer garden. Here you can bring your own food or buy something warm from the stalls. On offer are the classic Bavarian specialities from roast pork to meatballs or perhaps a portion of Obazda? Of course you can also get the classic beer garden pretzels here! Like all real beer gardens in Munich, the beer garden at the Viktualienmarkt is a self-service catering establishment and the rule applies:

You can bring your own food – drinks are bought from the landlord!

The beer garden was first built in 1970 in the centre of the market, at that time still under the freshly planted chestnut trees. Today, you can relax in the shade of the chestnut trees on a beautiful summer’s day and the trees now also protect you from a short rain shower. Since its opening, it has been a popular meeting place for all Munich residents and tourists, who relax with a view of the maypole and the rippling Weiß-Ferdl fountain and enjoy a beer. The beer garden is particularly popular at lunchtime and on Saturdays.

The beer garden is run by the Hochreiter family, who run other catering establishments in Munich and at the Oktoberfest. Special entertainment is provided by the Festring, which organises its brass band and traditional costume festival here. We wish you a pleasant stay!
