How to get to Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt is located in the city center, just south of Munich’s Marienplatz in the heart of the city. There are many ways to get to the Viktualienmarkt, which we would like to introduce to you.

Getting there by public transport

The easiest and most relaxing way to get here is by public transport. All the different modes of transport stop in the immediate vicinity, so you can choose between S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram or bus.

Travel by S-Bahn and U-Bahn

Almost all the S-Bahn lines that cross Munich from east to west stop under Marienplatz. The U3 and U6 underground lines, which run north-south under the city, stop one level below the S-Bahn. It is only about 200 metres from Marienplatz to Viktualienmarkt. The station is barrier-free and has escalators and a lift at Marienhof (behind the City Hall).

Travel by tram

The Munich tram stops just south of Viktualienmarkt at Reichenbachplatz. From here it is only about 150 metres to the Viktualienmarkt. The tram runs south along the old town, connecting the main station/Stachus and Sendlinger Tor in the west with Isartor in the east.

Travel by bus

The easiest way to get there is by bus, which stops directly at Viktualienmarkt. The bus stops at Viktualienmarkt on the corner of Rosentalstraße and Prälat-Zistl-Straße, next to the Schrannenhalle. Two bus lines go from Sendlinger Tor via Viktualienmarkt to Gärtnerplatz.

Getting there by car

Getting to the Viktualienmarkt by car is relatively easy – but not recommended on working days or on Saturdays. Many of the streets in the old town are one-way and there is a lot of traffic, especially on Saturdays. Vehicles other than taxis are no longer allowed to drive through from the valley via Viktualienmarkt to Oberanger – although some navigation systems suggest it. The best way to get to Viktualienmarkt is via the Munich Altstadtring – from Sendlinger Tor via Blumenstrasse and from Isartor via Frauenstrasse. As the parking lots along the road are very busy, we recommend you use a parking garage close to the Viktualienmarkt. The closest parking garage is directly below the Schrannenhalle and can be reached via Prälat-Zistl-Straße.
